The Problem With Moustaches

When growing your beard out you will be faced with 2 choices, either to trim your moustache or to let it grow. There's no shame in trimming your moustache, it keeps things tidy and makes eating a much easier experience.

However, a grand moustache is the crowning glory of many beards. Once grown they are the envy of many men. If you do choose to grow your moustache then you will certainly experience a few downsides of such long facial hair growing above your lip.

If you have a decent sized moustache, or are thinking of letting yours grow long, then this next part is for you.

It's an unpleasant truth that moustaches are called 'soup strainers' for a reason. They get covered and coated in food since they're the first thing you come into contact with whatever you are eating, before you get it into your mouth.

By the end of each meal, you will find that your moustache will be partially coated in food and drink particles, even if you've taken extra care not to make a mess.

Wiping it clean after each meal can help to some extent (until you can give your beard and moustache a good wash in the shower) but the real solution is to move the offending hairs out the way in the first place.

If you use a little moustache wax in the morning, then you can style and lift the hairs away from your lip, allowing you to each a meal with greater ease and far less mess.

Aside from help when eating, the other primary reason to use moustache wax is to add a bit of style to your beard.

You don't need to let the ends of your moustache droop down, why not try a different style and lift them up into a handlebar moustache? It can add the cherry on top to an already impressive beard.

Drooping Moustache

So if you're fed up of your 'stache getting coated in ketchup every lunchtime and/or if you want to take your beard styling to the next level, then below we've outlined the 3 main steps to ensure you apply the moustache wax correctly.

How To Apply The Wax

One of the main ingredients in moustache wax is beeswax. This is a natural product that gives the was a firm hold once set. There are a few things you'll need to do before you're ready to apply the wax.

1. As stated above, the wax sets firmly. When in the tin the wax is 'set' so you will need to prepare the wax before it is soft enough to use.

a) This is the quickest and most convenient option. Use you nail to scoop up a small amount of wax (no larger than the size of a pea). Use your fingers to rub the small ball of wax across the pad of your 2 fingers until the friction begins to warm the wax.

It is important to really work the wax until it is warm and malleable
b) The other method is to leave the wax somewhere warm, like on top of a radiator for 10 minutes or so before use, this will help to soften the wax.

c) An alternate step is to use a hairdryer. Aim the heat from the hairdryer at the open tin for several minutes until the wax feels softer to the touch.

2. Once the wax has softened and you have a blog of it on your fingers it is time to work it into your moustache.

Apply to the ends of your moustache and use your fingers to work your way down to the root of the hairs, be sure to apply the wax across the necessary length of your moustache. As a guide apply the wax to any areas that are likely to get in the way of your lip.

You can use a fine toothed comb to ensure the entire length of hair is coated and the wax is evenly spread.

3. After you moustache is nicely coated in the wax then you can tease the ends of your moustache into a point or into whatever shape you desire, as well as sweeping away any other hairs hanging over your lip.
